Although I told people I would create this science news blog in early September, it didn't happen. I'm not apologizing (being a grad student keeps me very busy), but I realized the reason why I never got to it. I am a perfectionist, and apparently have OCD (which I never believed until my med-student boyfriend had me read his psychology notes from class), and because I wasn't finding a good web host that would let me post previews of links with one click, such as Facebook does with the little image and a few sentences, I hadn't created a blog yet. I really had my heart set on having this feature and making my blog "perfect" in my mind. However, now I have realized that if I think you would rather me have an imperfect blog where you can't preview a link than have no blog at all, I should just make one and get it done with.
Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions on which web hosts to use. I am using Weebly for simplicity's sake, since I already created an academic webpage last year using it (although it is still incomplete), so I can just make my blog a new tab and learn to use a single host.
Anyways, after boring you with all those details, here is what I plan on posting in my blog:
1) news articles from various popular websites (not often academic journals) about any type of science, science education, women in science, nature and natural history
2) Very occasionally, a more in-depth opinion on these articles
3) Also very occasionally, my rants about life as a grad student and ecologist
The main focus will definitely be science news, but what I think is either really interesting or high-quality science journalism. I will most likely share links every day or every few days because I find a lot of cool stuff on the internet (mostly thanks to my friends and groups I'm part of on Facebook). I don't want this blog to be just for academics and other grad students to read. I try to share things I think are interesting to members of the general public as well, and not just news in ecology, which is my study area. Expect to see some medical breakthroughs, physics and astronomy, and many other scientific areas as well. I'm really passionate about citizen science, women in science issues, and the state of science education, so news about those will be in there too.
I'm not sure if I will incorporate any other features onto my blog quite yet, so it may be very simple and non-interactive, at least to start.
Enjoy!
