OutreachI am very interested in science outreach with the public and groups underrepresented in the STEM fields, and I created or participated in many outreach activities while a graduate student at MSU. Many of these were when I was President and Outreach Committee Chair of the Mu Sigma chapter of Graduate Women in Science (MSU chapter).
Outreach activities I was involved in: Plants and pollinators -Presented at the MSU Middle School Girls Math and Science Day -Presented at MSU Science Festival -Helped design Impression 5 Science Center Plant Virus Ecology exhibit (part of MI Nature exhibit) in Lansing, Michigan -Participated in Flight of the Butterflies Science Educator Workshop at Maryland Science Center in Baltimore, Maryland -Held a Skype video question and answer session about grasslands with middle school students from Virginia -Helped create interpretive trails to be used for science classes in an elementary school woodlot in Lansing, Michigan Check out this great video that was made about GWIS's Middle School Girls Math and Science Day! I am featured in clips at 0:30 and 1:31 when I was presenting a plant pollination activity.
Natural selection and adaptation
-Presented at the East Lansing Middle School Girls Math and Science Day Other STEM activities (physics, chemistry, engineering, etc.)
-Mentored students presenting at MacDonald Middle School Science Fair in East Lansing, Michigan -Designed and led three days of interactive science activities with low income children at Hunter Park Garden House in Lansing, Michigan Mentoring and encouraging STEM education
-Mentored undergraduate students presenting at MSU University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum -Presented undergraduate workshops on applying and interviewing for graduate school -Led tours of university science facilities for local high school students and sat on a graduate student panel to answer questions about college and science majors. Tutored and mentored high school students for the College Ambition Program (CAP) in Lansing, Michigan Native plant gardening
-Gave guidance and helped plant three native plant gardens to attract butterflies and pollinators for the Eastfield neighborhood in Lansing, Michigan -Gave guidance on creating a native plant garden to attract butterflies and pollinators on the campus of a East Lansing elementary school |
