Although this animation has a European focus, I think it strongly gets its point across on what the cascading effects are from overfishing. Even if you don't eat much seafood, it is the primary protein source for over a billion people, and overfishing is a very real problem. You may not have heard some of the scary facts: 9 kilos of fish bycatch is thrown overboard for every 1 kilo of shrimp caught by shrimp trawlers. It takes 5 kilos of wild-caught fish to feed 1 kilo of farmed salmon, so fish farming is not necessarily more sustainable. Recently, scientists recommended a fishing limit of 10,000 tons of bluefin tuna to prevent its population from collapsing. However, 61,000 tons of tuna were caught, which is definitely not sustainable for the population!
Although I've heard there are still some issues with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch guide, it is still a step in the right direction, and following their recommendations can help you lessen your impact on fish stocks. There are several viewing modes available here:
